The Joint States met today to review the status of the fall Chinook run sizes and review the recreational fishery impacts to the Upriver Bright fall Chinook run. The U.S. v Oregon Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) upgraded the Upriver Bright run size from 105,000 to 115,000 fish. This upgrade in run size allows for additional opportunity in this area of the Columbia River. The reduced area (Hood River bridge boundary) is in response to escapement needs at Spring Creek Hatchery. The States will continue to review run sizes and fisheries to determine if fisheries below Bonneville Dam can reopen to Chinook retention in the near future.

The States will continue to review run sizes and fisheries to determine if fisheries below Bonneville Dam can reopen to Chinook retention in the near future.

Late Fall Non-Indian Commercial Salmon Fishery

2007 Mainstem Commercial Salmon Fishery -Late Fall
SEASON:	7 AM -7 PM Monday September 24, 2007 (12 hours)
AREA:	Zones 1-3
SANCTUARIES:	Large sanctuaries: Elokomin-B, Abernathy, Cowlitz, Kalama-B, Lewis B
GEAR:	6 - inch maximum mesh size, unslackened floater gillnet. It will be legal to have onboard a commercial vessel more than one net, as long as the nets are of legal size for the fishery, or the net has a minimum mesh size of 9 inches. The length of any one net cannot exceed 1,500 feet in length. Nets not specifically authorized for use in this fishery may be onboard the vessel if properly stored. A properly stored net is defined as a net on a drum that is fully covered by a tarp (canvas or plastic) and bound with a minimum of ten revolutions of rope with a diameter of 3/8 (0.375) inches or greater.
ALLOWABLE SALES:	Salmon and white sturgeon. A maximum of 10 white sturgeon may be possessed or sold by each participating vessel during each calendar week (Sunday through Saturday) that the fishery is open. Limit applies to mainstem only. The weekly white sturgeon limit in Select Areas remains at 5 white sturgeon for each participating vessel during each calendar week (Sunday through Saturday). Green sturgeon retention prohibited.
MISCELLANEOUS RULES:	5-hour Quick Reporting Rules will be in effect for Washington buyers.

A Columbia River Compact hearing has been scheduled via teleconference for 10:00 AM Tuesday September 25.
A Compact/Joint State hearing is scheduled via teleconference for 1:00 PM Wednesday September 26 to review the ongoing recreational sturgeon fishery.

The following Columbia River Seasons were set:

2007 TREATY INDIAN COMMERCIAL FISHERIES
DATES:	6:00 AM Tuesday, September 25 until 6:00 PM Friday, September 28 (3.5 days)
AREA:	All of Zone 6
GEAR:	8 inch minimum mesh size restriction
SANCTUARIES:	Standard river mouth and dam sanctuaries remain in effect, including Spring Creek.
ALLOWABLE SALES:	Chinook, coho, steelhead, walleye, carp, and shad may be sold or retained for subsistence. Sockeye many not be sold but may be retained for subsistence. Sturgeon may not be sold. Sturgeon between 4-5 feet in length in The Dalles and John Day pools may be retained for subsistence. Sturgeon between 45-60 inches in the Bonneville pool may also be retained for subsistence.
ADDITIONAL RULES:	24-hour quick reporting rule for Washington buyers will be in effect. WAC 220-69-240. WDFW has adopted rules that require commercial purchasers to report their landings by a specified time. A Columbia River Compact hearing is scheduled for 10 AM Tuesday September 25, 2007 via telephone to consider commercial fishing periods for the late fall season and update the ongoing lower Columbia River recreational fisheries.
A Compact/Joint State hearing is scheduled for 1:00 PM Wednesday September 26, 2007 via teleconference to review on-going recreational sturgeon fishery.
