Coal Lake

This is a typical high mountain lake with extremely clear water, very nice views and willing fish. Coal Lake is a  short walk from the road, which makes this a great option if you don’t want to hike far. Fishing is good for 8 to 12 inch Eastern Brook Trout and Coastal Cutthroat Trout.  The fishing is better the further you get from the easy access points.

Getting here:

Take the Mountain Loop Highway east of Granite Falls until milepost 26. Then take a left at Forest Road 4060 (Coal Creek Road). Follow 4060 until you see a parking area and public outhouse on your left. On the opposite side of the road, a very short trail (~50 feet) will lead you to Coal Lake.

Fishing prospects calendar

Rainbow trout

Fishing success for Rainbow Trout is generally best in the spring when thousands of fish are stocked statewide, but they can be caught year-round in most waters with a little patience and persistence. Success remains high into June and gradually declines as water temperatures increase and fish move offshore to stay cool. Fish that escaped the spring harvest return to the nearshore areas in the fall as waters cool off. Some waters may also be stocked again in the fall further boosting catch rates.
