Janus Lake

This beautiful lake is surrounded by a mixture of forest and meadows. It is located just off the Pacific Crest Trail and is a popular destination for day hikers.  The fishing can be excellent for Coastal Cutthroat Trout ranging from 8 to14 inches in length. The lake can be fished from shore, although better fishing may be reached by using floatation. Janus Lake got its name from forest supervisor A.H. Sylvestor. Early maps showed the lake draining to the west, but when Sylvester visited the lake he found that it really drains to the east. So he named it Janus after the two-faced Roman god.

Getting here:

From Highway 2 take Smith Brook Road, (Forest Road 6700) located about 4 miles east of Stevens Pass. The trailhead is well marked and located on the left hand side of Smith Brook Road. Expect hiking time of about 1.5 hours each way. Round trip, the hike is about 6.5 miles with 1500’ elevation gain.
