Sitting among stunning meadows, Joan Lake is worth the effort it takes to reach it. If you can take your eyes off the beautiful surroundings to go fishing, you will find numerous 6 to 8 inch Eastern brook trout. The brookies are best caught with small flies, although bait or lures will also catch plenty of fish. Joan Lake sits at 5040 feet, so plan on visiting later in the season.
Getting here:
Take highway 2 to the Beckler River Road. Drive to the end of the pavement and turn right onto Forest Road 6520. The trailhead is found at the end of Forest Road 6520. The trail follows Johnson Ridge with spectacular views in every direction. Not to be outdone by the mountain views, the beautiful meadows are one of the highlights of this hike. Round trip, the hike is fairly strenuous 9 miles with 3000' elevation gain. Expect the hike to take about 3 hours each way.
