Lower Ashland Lake

This lake sits in the Puget Sound Convergance Zone so it gets a lot of rain and snow. The lake is dark and tannic from decaying organic materials and looks more like a typical low lake than a classic high lake. The lake often looks fishless as its population of Eastern Brook Trout stay near the bottom. Fishing can be tough but the fish grow to a decent size. You might also catch Coastal CutthroatTrout that are occassionaly stocked here. The trail to the lake is about 2.5 miles each way and you will pass by more opportunities to fish at Beaver Plant and Upper Ashland Lakes. Portions are on boardwalk which can be very slippery if it is wet or icy.

Getting here:

From Granite Falls follow the Mountain Loop Highway east for 11 miles to the Verlot Public Service Center. Proceed 4.6 more miles, turning right onto Forest Road 4020 signed for Boardman Lake, Ashland Lakes, and Bear/Pinnacle lakes. Follow this gravel road for 2.7 miles to a junction. Bear right onto FR 4021 and continue 1.4 miles to another junction. Turn left onto FR Spur 016, reaching the Ashland Lakes trailhead in 0.2 mile (elev. 2550 ft).
