This lake is special. It is one of the very few mountain lakes that can be accessed via a paved 1 mile trail. Needless to say it can be quite popular but the lake is large (53 acres) so if you bring floatation you can not only get off by yourself, you can also catch some of the abundant Westslope Cutthroat Trout which average 10 to 11 inches in length.
Getting here:
Drive the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) to Rainy Pass (4855 feet) which is the pass 5 miles west of the highest pass on the North Cascades Highway called Washington Pass. On the south side of the highway, there is a large parking area with 2 trailheads, one to Rainy Lake and the other to Lake Ann and Maple Pass. Hike the high quality paved formal trail towards Rainy Lake. The trail takes you to a nice viewpoint on the north shore of the lake.
