Elochoman River to open for hatchery spring chinook fishing beginning May 20
Action: The Elochoman River will open to fishing for hatchery spring chinook beginning Thursday, May 20.
Effective date: May 20 through July 31, 2004.
Species affected: Hatchery chinook salmon.
Location: Elochoman River from the mouth to the Elochoman Salmon Hatchery bridge located about 400 feet below the upper hatchery rack.
Reason for action: Adult spring chinook straying from Select Area Fishery Evaluation sites are entering the Elochoman River. These fish are not needed for brood stock. Eighty spring chinook have returned to the Elochoman Hatchery to date.
Other information: The daily limit is six hatchery salmon, no more than two of which may be adults. Minimum size is 12 inches. Wild chinook must be released unharmed. The Elochoman River opens for hatchery steelhead and other game fish beginning June 1 (see WDFW sport fishing rules pamphlet). Under permanent regulations, the Elochoman River will close to salmon fishing July 1 but reopen on Sept. 1.
