Expanded area, season and gear restrictions on
the lower Kalama River
Action:
1. Beginning June 16, night closure and non-buoyant lure restrictions are in
effect on the Kalama River from the mouth to the lower salmon hatchery
intake pipe. Only fish hooked inside the mouth may be retained.
2. Beginning Sept. 1, night closure, non-buoyant lure and stationary gear restrictions are in effect from the mouth to the natural gas pipeline. Only fish hooked inside the mouth may be retained.
Species affected: All Species
Effective dates by location:
1. The restrictions listed above for the Kalama River from the mouth upstream to the intake at the lower salmon hatchery will be in effect June 16 through Oct. 31.
2. The restrictions listed above for the Kalama River from mouth to natural gas pipeline will be in effect Sept. 1 through Oct. 31.
Other information:
The fly fishing only season from the natural gas pipeline crossing to the deadline at the intake of the lower salmon hatchery remains in effect Sept. 1 through Oct. 31. Motors are prohibited upstream of the Modrow Bridge.
Reason for action: The dry weather has caused the flows in the Kalama to be drastically reduced. The flows are similar to late summer. Snagging of wild Chinook and wild steelhead is occurring regularly. These regulation changes are needed to curtail illegal activities.
