Hood Canal Sport Shrimp season extended

May 19, 2005

Action: Sufficient quota remains in Hood Canal to extend the shrimp season one day between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on May 25, 2005.

Effective dates: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2005

Species affected: All shrimp.

Location: All waters of the Hood Canal (Marine Area 12)

Reason for action: Sufficient quota remains in Hood Canal to warrant extending the season for one day.

Other information: The Hood Canal shrimp district will open to recreational fishing because sufficient quota remains to warrant a one-day opener. High winds and a general reduction in overall effort, due to WDFWs new regulation that opens high effort areas at the same time, contributed to a lower harvest of spot shrimp in the canal during 2005. There was insufficient quota remaining to warrant opening Hood Canal on a Saturday, which generates greater effort than a mid-week opening does.
