Ilwaco (Marine Area 1) recreational salmon season update
Action: Closes salmon angling in a portion of Marine Area 1.
Effective date: July 16 through Sept. 30, 2022.
Species affected: Salmon.
Location: Marine Area 1, north of 46° 15’ N and east of 124° 08’ 40” W.
Rules and Locations:
Marine Area 1, north of 46° 15’ N and east of 124° 08’ 40” W (This is the area from approximately mid-mouth Columbia River north and within approximately 3 miles of shore.): Closed to salmon fishing.
Marine Area 1, outside of the area listed above: Daily limit 2, no more than 1 of which may be a Chinook. Chinook min. size 22”. Coho min. size 16”. Other salmon species no min. size. Release wild coho.
Reason for action: This rule change is necessary to extend salmon seasons in Ilwaco. Chinook catches have been larger than expected and these measures are needed to reduce catch of Chinook so that sufficient quota remains to access coho salmon later in the season.
Additional information: The catch quotas for recreational fisheries North of Cape Falcon in 2022 are 27,000 Chinook and 168,000 marked coho, with an Area 1 Chinook guideline of 7,700 and Area 1 coho quota of 84,000.
Columbia River Control Zone is closed to fishing for salmon.
The Columbia River North Jetty is open for salmon fishing as long as a portion of Marine Area 1 or the adjacent Buoy 10 fishery is open for salmon. Salmon rules from the North Jetty will follow the more liberal set of salmon rules between Marine Area 1 and the adjacent Buoy 10 fishery.
Marine Areas 1 through 4 are scheduled to close September 30, but areas could close earlier if quotas are met.
