Increases the daily limit of hatchery adult coho on the Cowlitz River

October 14, 2022

Updated Nov. 8 to reflect changes to the fishing boundary deadline below Barrier Dam.

Action: Increases the daily limit for hatchery adult coho salmon.

Effective dates Oct. 15 through Dec. 31, 2022.

Species affected: Hatchery coho salmon.

Location: Cowlitz River, from the mouth to the fishing boundary signs below the Barrer Dam.

Rule: Salmon: Daily limit 6; up to 4 adults may be retained. Min. size 12”. Release all salmon other than hatchery coho.

Reason for action: Coho salmon returns to the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery are projected to exceed broodstock collection goals for the Cowlitz Hatchery programs. Modifying coho fisheries will provide additional fishing opportunities while still meeting program needs and upstream reintroduction goals.

All other permanent rules published in the 2022-2023 Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet remain in effect. The fishing boundary signs  at the 400 ft. mark below the Barrier Dam will be moved upstream to about 100 ft below Barrier Dam by the end of the day Nov. 8. Anglers are reminded that until posted signs are moved the fishing deadline remains at the posted deadline 400 ft below Barrier Dam.
