Lake Scanewa (Cowlitz Falls Reservoir) to open two
weeks early for hatchery spring chinook
Action: Lake Scanewa will open two weeks early.
Species affected: Chinook.
Effective dates: May 16, 2009.
Location: Lake Scanewa (Cowlitz Falls Reservoir). The upstream boundary in the Cowlitz arm is the posted Lewis County PUD sign on Peters Road. The upstream boundary in the Cispus arm is the posted markers at the Lewis County PUD kayak launch, approximately 1.5 miles upstream from the confluence of the Cowlitz and Cispus arms.
Daily limits: The salmon daily limit will be six fish, of which up to 2 may be adults. Minimum size is 8 inches. Release wild chinook and wild coho.
Other information: The trout and other game fish seasons will open as scheduled on June 1.
Reason for action: Spring chinook returns to the Cowlitz River have been strong to date. Through last week at least 800 spring chinook had been released into the lake. In addition to re-introduction efforts, hatchery fish are also available for harvest in the upper Cowlitz watershed.
