October 7, 2014
Action: Delays fishing opening day for the Dungeness River.
Effective time and date: 12:01 a.m., Oct. 8, 2014 through 11:59 p.m., Oct. 15, 2014.
Species affected: All species.
Location: Dungeness River from the mouth upstream to the hatchery intake pipe (at river mile 11.3).
Reason for action: Current flow in the Dungeness River is well below the mean flow for early October. This lack of flow leaves Dungeness Chinook salmon, an Endangered Species Act listed stock within the Puget Sound ESU, particularly susceptible to disturbance as their spawning activities conclude. It is anticipated that rainfall sufficient to recharge the system and draw coho into the river will occur by October 16th otherwise this closure may be extended.
Information contact: Mike Gross, District 16 fish biologist, (360) 249-1210; Steve Thiesfeld, Region 6 Fish Program Manager, (360) 249-1201.
