Action: Closes salmon fishing on odd numbered days.
Effective date: July 5 through July 31, 2022.
Species affected: Salmon
Location: Marine Area 5 (Sekiu)
Rule: Salmon fishing is closed on odd numbered days (July 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, and 31).
Salmon fishing remains open on even numbered days (July 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30): Chinook min. size 22". Other salmon species, no min. size. Daily limit 2, including no more than 1 Chinook. Release chum, wild coho, and wild Chinook. (Kydaka point area remains closed.)
Reason for action: Catch rates have been high to date in neighboring Marine Area 4, necessitating its closure next week and creating the potential for shift of fishing effort to Area 5. The alternating day closures were recommending by Puget Sound Recreational Fishery Advisors and representatives of the Sekiu community as the preferred method for attempting to ensure total closure of the area is not needed early in the season.
