Puyallup River system closed to all fishing

March 4, 2004

Action: The Puyallup and Carbons rivers will closes to all fishing March 1, 2004.

Effective date: March 1 through March 31, 2004

Species affected: Steelhead and all other fish

Location: The Puyallup River from the 11th Street Bridge upstream to the Soldier?s Home Bridge in Orting and the Carbon River from its mouth to the Highway 162 Bridge.

Reason for action: The forecast for Puyallup River system wild winter steelhead returning this winter (2003/2004) is 909, 45 percent of the basin's spawning escapement goal of 2,000. The closure is necessary to minimize impacts to wild steelhead due to potential incidental hooking mortality and disturbance of spawning fish.
