Recreational shrimp fishing closing in Marine Area 11
* Note Fishing Rule Change update on May 27 for Area 11
Action: Recreational shrimp fishing is closed, effective immediately, in all waters of Marine Area 11, the Vashon Island / Des Moines area.
Effective dates: Immediately.
Species affected: All shrimp.
Location: Marine Area 11.
Reason for Action: The recreational spot shrimp share in this area has been reached.
Other information: WDFW officials observed a substantial increase in fishing effort in Marine Area 11 this year, with 454 recreational shrimp pot buoys counted on opening day, compared to 86 last year. In addition, ramp sampling in the area showed that catch rates were relatively high, and the shrimp were large, resulting in the recreational catch on Saturday exceeding the recreational share by about three-fold. The Department will look further into the possibility of increasing the quota, but due to the large overage it is unlikely that more days of recreational fishing will be allowed this year.
