Rules extended for release of sport sturgeon below Bonneville Dam

Action: The sturegon retention closure on the Columbia River and tributaries downstream of the Wauna power lines (near Cathlamet) will be extended through Dec. 31. The Columbia River and tributaries from the Wauna power lines upstream to Bonneville Dam will close to sturgeon retention from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31.

Effective date: Retention closure remains in effect through Dec. 31, 2003, downstream of the Wauna power lines. Retention closure takes effect at 12::01 a.m., Nov.1 and runs through Dec. 31, 2003, from the Wauna power lines upstream to Bonneville Dam.

Species affected: Sturgeon

Location: The Columbia River and tributaries from Bonneville Dam to the mouth.

Reason for action: The dates for retention of sturgeon were adopted because Washington and Oregon fish managers estimate that the harvest guideline below Bonneville Dam of 30,000 fish will be achieved by Oct. 31.

Other information: The Columbia River and tributaries below the Wauna power lines already are closed to sport retention of sturgeon.
