Sport sturgeon retention season
closes in the John Day Pool
Action: Closes retention of sturgeon in the John Day Pool.
Effective dates: June 14, 2014 until further notice.
Species affected: White sturgeon
Location: The Columbia River and tributaries from John Day Dam upstream to McNary Dam (John Day Reservoir).
Reason for action: The harvest guideline of 500 fish is expected to be reached.
Other information: Catch-and-release fishing for sturgeon will continue to be allowed. The section of the Columbia River and tributaries between The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam, excluding the spawning sanctuary, will remain open to sturgeon retention until the harvest guideline is reached. The section of the Columbia River from Bonneville Dam and The Dalles Dam, excluding the spawning sanctuary, is scheduled to open to sturgeon retention for four days: June 13-14 and June 20-21.
The three sturgeon spawning sanctuaries, from McNary Dam downstream 1.5 miles to the HWY 82 (HWY 395) bridge, from John Day Dam downstream 2.4 miles the Rufus grain elevator, and from The Dalles Dam downstream 1.8 miles to a line from the east (upstream) dock at the Port of The Dalles boat ramp straight across to a marker on the Washington shore, are closed to all sturgeon angling through July 31.
