Spring chinook sport fishery
to close on the Icicle River
Action: Close the Icicle River (Chelan Co.) to fishing for hatchery spring chinook.
Effective time and date: One hour after official sunset on June 19, 2013.
Species affected: Spring chinook salmon.
Location: Icicle River, from the closure signs located 800 feet upstream of the mouth to 500 feet downstream of the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery Barrier Dam.
Reason for action: Previous in-season run analysis predicted that about 4,000 salmon were en route to the Icicle River. Current in-season run analysis has reduced that estimate to 3,000 or fewer. Currently, the majority of these fish are thought to have entered the Icicle River. About 1,400 salmon (1,000 to Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery, and 400 to Colville Confederated Tribes Chief Joseph Hatchery) are needed to meet hatchery broodstock collection goals. The Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery has currently collected only about 1,000 spring chinook for this purpose. To assist in preventing a potential shortage of spring chinook needed in the broodstock requirement, it is necessary to close the sport fishery at this time.
