Sturgeon retention closes in John Day Pool

March 14, 2024

Action: Closes retention of sturgeon.

Effective date: March 15 through April 30, 2024.

Species affected: White sturgeon.

Location: Columbia River from John Day Dam to McNary Dam and all adjacent Washington tributaries.

Reason for action: The projected total catch of white sturgeon in the John Day pool through March 14 is 99 fish as compared to the harvest guideline of 105 fish (94 percent). Therefore, not enough fish remain on the guideline to allow for additional retention opportunities. These populations are managed under sustainable harvest guidelines.

Additional information: John Day Pool remains open for catch-and-release fishing for sturgeon on days not open to retention, as do many other stretches of the mainstem Columbia River.

Information contact: Region 5 Ridgefield Office, 360-696-6211.

Fishers must have a current Washington fishing license, appropriate to the fishery. Check the WDFW "Fishing in Washington" rules pamphlet for details on definitions and regulations.
