Yakima River “Reservation Boundary Reach”
closes for winter whitefish fishing
Action: Close the Yakima River reach bordering the Yakama Reservation to winter whitefish fishing.
Effective Date: Immediately through Feb. 29, 2012.
Species affected: Mountain whitefish.
Location: Highway 223 Bridge at Granger to Interstate 82 Bridge at Union Gap.
Other Information: By Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife permanent rule, the portion of the Yakama Nation Reservation Boundary Reach (RBR) from the lower boundary at the Hwy. 221 (Sunnyside - Mabton) Bridge to the Hwy. 223 (Granger) Bridge is closed to all fishing from Nov. 1-April 30 to protect migrating and over-wintering steelhead that are listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This rule change extends the Yakima River winter closure upstream to the upper RBR boundary at Union Gap.
Reason for action: Additional protection to minimize impacts to ESA-listed steelhead is needed.
