2023 Ocean Sport Salmon Quota Report

The La Push and Neah Bay ocean management areas opened for recreational salmon fishing for all species on June 17. The Columbia River and Westport areas opened for all species on June 24. Catch details for each area are described below, where available.

In-season Management actions:

July 6, 2023:

  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, July 8, the bag limit in the Neah Bay and La Push areas is modified to 2 salmon.

July 26, 2023:

  • Effective 12:01AM Friday, July 28, Chinook retention is prohibited in the Westport area on Fridays and Saturdays. Possession of Chinook is illegal when retention is prohibited in the area.

August 17, 2023:

  • Effective 12:01AM Friday, August 18, the bag limit in the Westport area is modified to 2 salmon, only one of which may be a Chinook.

August 25, 2023:

  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 26, the remaining coho salmon quota in the Columbia River area is adjusted on an impact-neutral basis from mark-selective to non-mark-selective. 
    • The adjusted non-mark-selective coho salmon quota in the Columbia River area is 21,070.
  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 26, the bag limit in the Columbia River area is modified to 2 salmon, only one of which may be a Chinook. Wild coho may be retained.
  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 26, the remaining coho salmon quota in the Westport area is adjusted on an impact-neutral basis from mark-selective to non-mark-selective. 
    • The adjusted non-mark-selective coho salmon quota in the Westport area is 16,010.
  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 26, the bag limit in the Westport area is modified to 2 salmon, only one of which may be a Chinook. Wild coho may be retained.
  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 26, the remaining coho salmon quota in the La Push area is adjusted on an impact-neutral basis from mark-selective to non-mark-selective. 
    • The adjusted non-mark-selective coho salmon quota in the La Push area is 1,210.
  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 26, the bag limit in the La Push area is modified to 2 salmon, release chum. Wild coho may be retained.
  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 26, the remaining coho salmon quota in the Neah Bay area is adjusted on an impact-neutral basis from mark-selective to non-mark-selective. 
    • The adjusted non-mark-selective coho salmon quota in the Neah Bay area is 4,800.
  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 26, the bag limit in the Neah Bay area is modified to 2 salmon, release chum. Wild coho may be retained.
  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 26, the subarea east of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line within the Neah Bay area is closed to salmon fishing.

This area closed to salmon fishing as scheduled on Saturday, September 30.  Through Sunday, September 30, 9,566 Chinook (83% of the area guideline), 15,593 mark-selective coho (20% of the area quota), and 15,688 non-mark-selective coho (72% of the adjusted area quota) have been landed.

A total of 212 anglers participated in the salmon fishery October 3-7, landing 60 Chinook and 3 coho.  Through Saturday, October 7, 1,064 Chinook (67% of the area guideline), 611 mark-selective coho (15% of the area quota), and 953 non-mark-selective coho (79% of the adjusted area quota) have been landed.  This area closed to salmon fishing as scheduled on Saturday, October 7.

This area closed to salmon fishing as scheduled on Saturday, September 30.  Through Sunday, September 30, 5,550 Chinook (64% of the area guideline), 2,845 mark-selective coho (17% of the area quota), and 2,803 non-mark-selective coho (58% of the adjusted area quota) have been landed.

July 13, 2022:

  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, July 16, the subarea North of 46o 15’ N and East of 124o 08’ 40” W within the Columbia River area is closed.
  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, July 16, Chinook retention is prohibited in the La Push area.
  • Effective 12:01AM Monday, July 25, the bag limit in the La Push area is modified to 2 salmon, only one of which may be a Chinook. 

July 19, 2022:

  • Effective 12:01AM Friday, July 22, Chinook retention is prohibited in the Westport area on Fridays and Saturdays.

August 17, 2022:

  • Effective 12:01AM Thursday, August 18, possession of Chinook in the Westport area is illegal on days when retention of Chinook is prohibited in the Westport area.
  • Effective 12:01AM Tuesday, August 23, Chinook retention is prohibited in the Westport area.

August 22, 2022:

  • Effective 12:01AM Tuesday, August 23, Chinook retention is prohibited in the Columbia River area.

August 25, 2022:

  • Effective 12:01AM on Saturday, August 27, the remaining coho salmon quota in the Westport area is adjusted on an impact-neutral basis from mark-selective to non-mark-selective. The adjusted non-mark-selective coho salmon quota is 14,000.

September 13, 2022:

  • Effective 12:01AM Wednesday, September 14,600 Chinook transferred from the Neah Bay area guideline to add 390 Chinook to the Columbia River area guideline. The adjusted Chinook guidelines are 5,510 for the Neah Bay area and 8,090 for the Columbia River area. The adjusted north of falcon recreational Chinook quota is 26,790.

2021 Ocean Sport Salmon Quota Report

The four ocean management areas between the U.S.-Canada border and Cape Falcon, OR opened for recreational salmon fishing for all species except coho on June 19.  The Columbia Ocean and Westport areas opened for all salmon species on June 27; the La Push and Neah Bay areas opened for all salmon species on July 4.  Catch details for each of the areas are described below.

July 20, 2021: 

  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, July 24, the bag limit in the Neah Bay area is modified to 2 salmon, only one of which may be a Chinook

August 6, 2021:

  • Westport area is open to recreational salmon fishing 7 days per week

August 20, 2021:

  • Effective 12:01AM Saturday, August 21, the bag limit in the Westport area is modified to 2 salmon.

August 26, 2021:

  • The Columbia River area was closed to salmon fishing effective 12:59 PM Sunday, July 26.

August 5, 2020: 

  • The Neah Bay area was closed to salmon fishing effective 12:59 PM Friday, August 7.

September 2, 2020: 

  • Effective 12:01 AM September 4, the Westport area was opened 7 days per week with a daily bag limit of 2 salmon.
  • Transferred 228 coho from the La Push subarea quota to the Neah Bay area subquota.

  • Transferred 1,000 coho from the NOF troll fishery to the Neah Bay area recreational fishery.
  • The resulting Neah Bay area recreational quota is 5,370 coho.

August 8, 2018: 

  • Transferred 2,400 coho from the NOF troll fishery to the Columbia River area recreational fishery.
  • Transferred 600 coho from the Westport Area recreational fishery to the Columbia River area recreational fishery.
  • The resulting Columbia River area recreational quota is 24,000 coho.
  • Any unused coho remaining from transfer will be reverted to their original fishery proportionally.
  • The Columbia River area and Neah Bay area recreational fisheries were closed effective 11:59 PM Sunday, August 12.

August 23, 2018: 

  • Transferred 2,400 coho from Columbia River area quota back to the NOF troll fishery.
  • Transferred 600 coho from Columbia River area quota back to the Westport area sport fishery.
  • Transferred chinook remaining on Neah Bay area 4 guideline (1,876 chinook) to the NOF troll fishery, and added those chinook to the troll sub-area quota north of the Queets River.
  • Effective 12:01AM Friday, August 24, the Westport area is open 7 days per week and the bag limit is modified to 2 salmon.

August 30, 2018:

  • Reopened Columbia River area to salmon fishing September 2 and 3.
  • Transferred 2,400 coho from the NOF troll fishery to the Columbia River area recreational fishery.
  • The resulting Columbia River area recreational quota is 23,400 coho.

2017 Ocean Sport Salmon Quota Report

Three of the four management areas between the U.S.-Canada border and Cape Falcon, OR opened for salmon fishing on June 24; the Westport area opened on July 1. The Columbia Ocean Area and the Westport Area closed to salmon fishing on Tuesday, August 22. The La Push and Neah Bay areas closed to salmon fishing as scheduled on Monday, September 4. Catch details for each of the areas are described below.

In-season management actions

  • July 19: Effective Saturday, July 22, the recreational bag limit in the Westport area is 2 salmon.
  • August 10: Effective Aug 10, transfer 2,600 coho from the commercial troll fishery quota to the recreational Area 2 coho quota. The revised Area 2 recreational coho quota is 18,140.
  • August 17:
    Effective Aug 17, transfer 500 coho from the commercial troll fishery quota to the recreational Area 1 coho quota. 
    Effective Aug 17, transfer 1,027 coho from the recreational Area 2 coho quota to the recreational Area 1 coho quota. 
    Effective Aug 17, transfer 400 coho from the recreational Area 4 coho quota to the recreational Area 3 coho quota. 
    Revised sub-area coho quotas are:

    Columbia River Area - 22,527
    Westport Area - 17,113
    La Push Area - 1,490
    Neah Bay Area - 3,970

Effective 11:59 PM Tuesday, August 22, the Columbia River area and the Westport area are closed to recreational salmon fishing.

2016 Ocean Sport Salmon Quota Report

The area between the U.S.-Canada border and Cape Falcon, OR opened for salmon fishing on July 1. The area between the U.S.-Canada border and Leadbetter Point (Westport, La Push, and Neah Bay areas) closed for salmon fishing on August 21. The Columbia Ocean Area closed for salmon fishing on August 27. Catch details for each of the areas are described below.

  • August 10: Effective 11:59 PM Saturday, Aug 27, close the Columbia River area to salmon fishing.
